You will be introduced to the world of subtitling and its professional, linguistic and technical components through classroom sessions, group discussions, technical practices and industry-related learner experiences.
Course Description
The ‘Tamil to English Film/TV Subtitling’ course aims to impart the knowledge, skills and attitudes needed to function as quality subtitlers in Tamil entertainment industry. This subtitling course will help you
- Know about various types of subtitling and the challenges and possibilities.
- Meet with professional teams you will work with and know more about the stages of the workflow and skills needed for effective subtitling
- Understand the need for linguistic modifications and develop strategies for various genres such as humour, songs, as well as for regular and other dialects of the language
- Learn subtitling terminologies and standards in subtitling and apply this learning in a continuous technical practice using Spot, a professional subtitling software
- Reflect upon personal qualities and attitudes to cope with the challenges

- Producing subtitles including both timing and translation components for video files from various genres in movies and TV productions
- Gaining knowledge about subtitling through theory sessions and learner experiences such as interacting with subtitlers around the world as well as other members of the Film/TV industry whose work directly impacts subtitling
- Understanding one’s own personal strengths in subtitling and being better prepared to take up real-life projects

- Basic skills in reading and understanding Tamil
- Advanced skills in reading, writing and translating into English
- Basic typing skills and ability to learn and use computer software
